HPP President and CEO William S. George Named PCCY Public Citizen of the Year

George to Announce Unprecedented Partnership Promoting Good Health and Leadership for Children During Acceptance Speech

Philadelphia, PA – Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) will honor Health Partners Plans President and CEO William S. George with its annual Public Citizen of the Year award. PCCY, the region’s leading nonprofit child advocacy organization for the past 35 years, selects an awardee in the Greater Philadelphia region who works tirelessly to improve the lives of children. Past recipients include former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, former Secretary of the Department of Human Services Estelle Richman, philanthropist and arts education supporter Carole Haas Gravagno and longtime civic leader and educator Bernard Watson. Mr. George will be honored for his commitment to putting children on the path to good health early in life.

As President and CEO of one of the few not-for-profit, hospital-owned health maintenance organizations in the country, Mr. George has consistently made sound decisions about quality health care for children. He’s spearheaded Health Partners Plans’ support of Frankie’s World, a nonprofit medical daycare center for children with special health care needs. Mr. George has committed to providing start-up money to build a specially designed playground for the children of Frankie’s World. He’s also at the helm of Health Partners Plans’ award-winning Baby Partners program, which provides expectant mothers with resources during and after pregnancy to improve the health of their babies and decrease their odds of delivering low weight infants.

Additionally, Mr. George fostered an unprecedented partnership with the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance (MANNA), “prescribing” medically nutritious meals to members battling diabetes and other chronic conditions. To further promote lifelong eating habits for families, members with children in the home also receive well-balanced MANNA meals.

Further demonstrating his commitment to youth, Mr. George will announce a new, exciting partnership with another local nonprofit during PCCY’s celebration. This unique initiative is designed to improve the health of children through mentorship and exercise. Health Partners Plans is the only health insurer to partner with this organization.

“Bill’s leadership and passion for providing innovative ways to improve health care for children and families in our region makes him the best candidate for this award,” said Donna Cooper, executive director of PCCY. “Providing nutrition, supplying resources for special needs children and ensuring kids have a healthy start in life speaks to his professional and personal commitment to our region’s youngest members.”
“I am humbled to be recognized by PCCY, which has led the way for children’s advocacy in our region for 35 years,” says Mr. George. “I share in PCCY’s commitment and I know the work we do will continue to improve and transform the lives of children everywhere.”

Mr. George will accept the Public Citizen of the Year award at PCCY’s celebration on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:00 p.m., at Vie Ballroom, located at 600 North Broad Street in Philadelphia.
