At-Home FIT Kits Offer Convenience While Fighting Colorectal Cancer

American Cancer Society Supports Health Partners Plans Early Colorectal Screening for Medicare Members

Philadelphia, PA - Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), it claims the lives of 50,000 people every year. But, like many forms of cancer, early detection is key to saving lives.

In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, Health Partners Plans (HPP) – in partnership with ACS – is continuing a life-saving initiative to help its Medicare members detect colorectal cancer. The “at-home” colorectal screening program targets members between the ages of 50 and 75 years old, offering them the convenience and privacy of early detection. The goal is to improve the health outcomes of members and increase screenings for colorectal malignancies, which have a 90 percent cure rate when detected early, according to ACS.

“This at-home colorectal FIT kit offers convenient screening that can save lives,” says Veronica Hill-Milbourne, RN, MS, JD, vice president of clinical programs for Health Partners Plans and board member of the local advisory council for ACS. “Our number one priority at HPP is to improve the health outcomes of our members. That’s why offering this vital tool to fight colorectal cancer continues to be an important initiative for HPP every year.”

“The death rate for colorectal cancer has dropped over the years in part because cancer-causing polyps are found during screenings. But there are still millions of people that aren’t getting tested,” says John Alduino, MED, senior director of State Health Systems for ACS. “That’s why we firmly believe the best screening is the one that actually gets done. We fully support Health Partners Plans’ ongoing initiative to make access to colorectal screening easier for members. That’s what saves lives.”

The FIT (fecal immunochemical test) kit and sample analysis are provided to HPP Medicare members at no cost to them. Along with their results, members receive valuable ACS materials to learn about the risks, important screenings and treatments for colorectal cancer.
